The Breathe Story

Breathe as it turned out was the last song we recorded as ‘Moth’ and is I think an undiscovered gem still waiting for a global listening audience.
It started from a 12 string acoustic hook that I had started to play and thought was a good way to start a song which slowly became our attempt at the classic Rock Ballad. The component parts of the song came together quite quickly but I had no Idea what to call it or how the Melody would go. Undaunted by this I decided to record an entire backing track including strings, Mandolin (which I had to learn) and because I decided not to use the cliched bombastic Massive drum track I decided to use a Tabla loop I acquired from recording ‘Talvin Singh’. Cecelia was in the control room to push the mythical ‘Red Button’ and I had asked her to try and write a melody and lyrics that would scan/suite the backing track. With the backing track recorded and really sounding the nuts, I got Jon Brooder our Bass Player in to give us some Brooding Bass parts which he provided in bucket loads and in not more than two takes had given the track a fat warm glow,
Which made the track an epic of a headphone listen. So it was Vocals time and Cecelia had come up with something she wanted to try which was really encouraging for me as it was the first time she had written anything for us completely on her own. I pushed the red button and listened as she came out with the most beautiful lyrics and melody that I could have wished for and after a few takes and some drop ins (no overdubs) she had it nailed I was ecstatic as Cecelia had brought the song to life. We never played Breathe Live but it remains one of my favourite songs on the Album.
